The Nar Phu Valley Trekking is one of the best-underrated trekking. As this trail is not crowded like other popular trekking routes, we can say it is the best route for nature lovers. Nonetheless, thrilling mountain views with adventure walking make this trip special.
During the TREKKING TO NAR Village as well as PHU village, you can see the Mani walls, Chortens, Snow-capped mountains, and stone-patched houses inspired culture in Nar Phu Valley that was isolated a few years ago. But now this trail is open and is waiting for you.
Nar Phu Trekking was opened in 2003 and is still underrated trekking in Annapurna. This trip offers an amazing experience to the tourists. However, as expensive as the Annapurna Circuit, a limited number of tourists are visiting there. Because to do this trekking, trekkers have to go with restricted areas trekking permit, which cost 75 to 100 USD per week (depending on the season). Because of permits cost, Nar Phu Trek is still less demanded.
If you want to do only the Nar Phu Valley Trek, 8 to 10 days would be sufficient. But if you want to continue on to the Annapurna Circuit Trek after visiting Nar Phu, then we required to have extra 6 days.
We have both itineraries, with and without the Annapurna Circuit Trek, for the Nar Phu Trip. On the 11-day plan, we drive to Jagat from Kathmandu, and our trek begins from Dharapani and ends in Upper Pisang. From Upper Pisang, we drive back to Besisahar. As this itinerary is short in terms of time and friendly to altitude, we can say that our itinerary is the best.

Today marks our 3rd day of the Nar Phu Valley trip, and on this day we are entering the restricted areas of Annapurna. Upon registering our restricted area permit at the Koto police check post, we will follow the banks of the Soti Khola river. On the way to Meta village, we will see pine forests and cascading waterfalls. From Meta, we will have impressive views of Annapurna II and Lamjung Himal.
Beyond Dharamsala, the landscape is similar to Mustang as it lies in the Tibetan Plateau. However, it is a much less-touched area than Mustang. Stay overnight at a teahouse in Meta.
On this day, we will trek from Meta to Phu. Passing several suspension bridges, we will reach the deserted fields of Chyaku. After a few hours of climbing from Chyaku, we will reach a small pass, from where we can see excellent views of Annapurna II and Pisang Peak. On the way to Phu Village, we will see colorful chortens, blue sheep, local houses, and farmland. From Phu Village, we can see splendid views of Himlung Himal and other snow peaks. Stay overnight at a teahouse in Phu Village.
Before Kangla Pass, we should take a rest day. So today, we will stay in Phu Village for acclimatization. However, it is recommended to make some side trips to get more acclimatized. Therefore, we will hike to Himlung Base Camp (4,920m). It takes around 7 to 8 hours for the Himlung Base Camp hike from Phu Village. Stay overnight at a teahouse in Phu Village.
On the 6th day, it will be a short trek (3 to 4 hours) to Nar Phedi. At Nar Phedi, we will stay overnight at the monastery. Stay overnight at a teahouse in Nar Phedi.
From Nar Phedi, some tourists go directly to Ngwal via Kang La Pass. However, it is very difficult to make the journey from Nar Phedi to Ngwal in a single day. Therefore, to make it easier for tourists, we plan to stay at Nar Village before crossing the pass. We will stay in Nar Village and prepare for Kang La Pass. Stay overnight at a teahouse in Nar Village.
This is the most important day of the whole Nar Phu Valley Trekking. Because today we crossed the Kang La pass. To pass safely, it is recommended to start early in the morning. After around 5 to 6 hours ascending, we’ll reach Kang La(5,320m/17,455ft).
From Kang La, we’ll see amazing views of Annapurna II, IV, Gangpurna, Khangsar Khang, Tilicho Peak, and Pisang Peak. After 3 hours of steep descent from Kang La, we’ll reach Ngwal village. Stay overnight at a teahouse in Ngwal.
The trek from Ngwal to Upper Pisang is easy walking as it is descending. On the way to Pisang, we will pass many chortens. We will also have great views of Annapurna and other peaks from Ghyaru village. It takes around 3 to 4 hours to walk from Ngwal to Upper Pisang. Upon reaching Pisang, we will drive to Besisahar using local Jeep. The drive from Upper Pisang to Besisahar takes around 5 hours. Stay overnight at a hotel in Besisahar.
After having breakfast at Besisahar, we will drive to Kathmandu using tourist bus. The drive takes around 6 to 7 hours to get Kathmandu from Besisahar. Upon reaching your hotel in Kathmanud, our 10 days Nar Phu Valley Trek wil be concluded.
Let’s create a custom trip just for you. It takes only 2 to 3 minutes.

Two popular trekking trails are interrelated with Nar Phu. To reach the main entry point of this trail, you need to cover approximately 25% of the Annapurna Circuit trek. After crossing Kangla Pass, you will reach Ngwal, a popular trekking accommodation spot on the Annapurna Circuit. From Ngwal, you have four options:
1) Continue with Annapurna Circuit Trek
2) Continue to Tilicho Lake and then to the Annapurna Circuit
3) Tilicho Lake Trek via Nar Phu Valley
4) Nar Phu Valley only
So according to your holiday time and interest, you can extend or shorten the Nar Phu trek.
The Nar Phu Valley Trek is considered a challenging trek because it involves high-altitude hikes over several days, steep ascents, and the narrow Kang La Pass. Additionally, there are limited lodges in this trekking trail. So it is not as flexible as some other popular trekking trails.
Trekkers should follow a pre-arranged itinerary to ensure that they are able to check out of the trail at the specified time. This trek is not recommended for beginners, but it’s a great choice for those with prior trekking experience.
Nar Valley is located in the Annapurna region. Stunning mountain views, narrow canyons, Buddhist Gompa, the unique culture of local people, and the villager’s typical lifestyle is the primary attraction of Nar Phu.
Kang La Pass is a mountain pass which is located in the Manang District of Nepal. The altitude of Kang La is 5,320m from sea level. This pass is more difficult than the Thorong La Annapurna Circuit.
Because of Permit fees, expensiveness, and adventure grading trek only limited people can offer Nar Phu Kang La Pass Trek.
Since our company has operated this trip before many times, you can ask questions about this trip. We Base Camp Hike is always ready to make your Nar Phu Trek itinerary according to your wish.
It is possible to make a short Nar Phu Trip.
To make the short trek to Nar Phu Valley, it’s required around 9 days. Among the 9 days, 1 day to get Koto from Kathmandu, 1 day to get Kathmandu from Pisang, and 7 days for Nar Phu Area. For those who have previous trekking experience in the Himalayas, it is possible to make a short journey to Nar Phu.
Regarding the solo trek to Nar Phu, so far not been permitted. Because at least two participants are required to get restricted area permits. And to get Nar Phu Permit, you can’t apply individually. You should go through a registered trekking agency. Solo trekking to Nar Phu isn’t permitted by the Nepal government.
Since Nar Phu has recently opened a remote mountain route, the teahouse and its meals (food) are on the way to improvements. The Teahouse on this route is the basis as well as food items you will not get on the Annapurna Circuit trail. Point to be noted, in Nar Phedi, accommodation is in the Monastery for that night.
Needless to say, September to November is the best season to do Nar Phu Trek. Only mid-winter time we can not accomplish Kangla Pass. More often to say, during wintertime because of snow, it’s risky to walk on the narrow trail of the trek.
Though the rainy season it’s difficult to get to the entry point of the NVT trek due to landslides, after entering Nar Phu Area we can do this trek.
March to May is also a good season to explore Nar Valley.
Regarding permits for Nar Phu Valley Trek, it requires 3 permits. They are Annapurna Conservation Area Permits(ACAP), Tourist Information Management System (TIMS), and Restricted Areas Permits. ACAP and TIMS permit price remain the same throughout the year. But Restricted Areas permit price changes according to trekking seasons. September to November, it cost USD 100 per person for 1 week and beyond USD 15 per person per day.
Similarly, from December to August, it costs USD 75 per Per Week and beyond week USD 15 per person per day.
All in all, being a restricted area, a trekking permit to Nar Phu is cheaper than Upper Mustang.
Our family of four (my wife and I with our two daughters 18 and 20 years old) had the trip of a lifetime trekking through Nepal with Navaraj Nepal (Mr. Nepal) and our two porters (Bijon and Ramhari) – organized by Jayaram, the founder of Base Camp Hike.
From the beginning, booking with Base Camp Hike and Jayaram felt like a leap of blind faith. We were sending payment to a company halfway around the world and hoping everything would work out. From the moment we met Jayaram and his team, however, they delivered on every promise they made—and then exceeded our expectations at every opportunity.
Before we even arrived in Nepal, Jayaram was incredibly responsive and helpful throughout the planning process. Based on his recommendation, we changed our itinerary to avoid unnecessary walking on roads, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions we made. The logistics of the entire trip were seamless. Throughout our trek, Jayaram checked in with Navaraj every day to make sure everything was going well. Even after our trek ended and we continued sightseeing on our own, he stayed in regular contact, asking if there was anything he could do to make our trip even better. That level of customer service is incredibly rare.
The Nar Phu Valley Trek itself is simply mind-blowingly beautiful. If you’re looking for an unforgettable Himalayan experience that is a little off the beaten path, we cannot recommend it highly enough. The scenery is spectacular, the villages are fascinating, and the sense of remoteness makes the entire journey feel truly special.
Our guide, Navaraj—also known as “Mr. Nepal”—was outstanding. He constantly checked to make sure everyone had exactly what they needed, whether that meant giving us space to enjoy the mountains on our own or creating opportunities to connect with local people and culture. My wife has a particular interest in Buddhism, and really all of us wanted to learn more, so Navaraj arranged for us to stay at a monastery, which became one of the highlights of our trip. In each village we visited, he found out what was happening locally and invited us to participate in authentic experiences, whether that meant joining an organized prayer gathering or spending time talking with village elders. These weren’t activities listed on an itinerary—they were meaningful cultural experiences that happened because Navaraj genuinely wanted us to experience the real Nepal.
Our porters, Ramhari and Bijon, were equally wonderful. They were incredibly hardworking, always positive, friendly, and eager to help. They made the trek more enjoyable every single day, and we were grateful to have them as part of our team.
One moment perfectly captures the dedication of this crew. My wife accidentally left her glasses behind in a village two days earlier on the trek. Thanks to Navaraj’s persistence—and the kindness of several local people who volunteered to carry the glasses from village to village—they somehow caught up with us farther along the trail. We were amazed. It was just one more example of the lengths this team would go to in order to take care of their clients.
We would not hesitate for a second to book another trek with Base Camp Hike, Jayaram, Navaraj, Ramhari, and Bijon. The only regret we have is that we couldn’t stay longer. If you’re considering trekking in Nepal, we wholeheartedly recommend both the Nar Phu Valley Trek and this incredible team. They transformed an amazing trek into a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Everything was wonderful. We had the most amazing time and so much of it is because of Ambar, Dutman, and Jayaram, our guides and porter. We honestly think we had the best guide and porter of anyone we had seen on the whole trek. It feels like we have all become family! Loved that this is a locally, Nepali runner business.
Jayaram, who set up our trek, checked in on us all the time and made sure all was going well. During our booking, he was so prompt to respond and was so helpful and knowledgeable. He customized out trip for us and met us in Kathmandu to go over the details before the trek started.
Our guide and porter were beyond wonderful. So much knowledge of the culture, mountains, and exactly what we needed to eat, drink, and do to be able to make it over two 17,000 feet passes. They even carried my husband’s personal bag over the first pass to make sure he made it. They went above and beyond!
When we come back to Nepal, which we will, we will definitely be booking with BaseCamp again!!
The organizer send us before the travel all de details about what we need to bring with us, from clothes to medicines. He well prepared our trip according with our demands.
The guide done his best to offer us best accommodation places and he was very flexible to change the trail according with whether condition and our body conditions.
