Review of Trail: Why Trekking to Langtang Valley

In my personal view, Langtang region trekking is one of the best choices for those tourists. It is the perfect destination for those who want to see flora and fauna with great mountain views. Moreover, this region is the easiest trekking route to get there as it doesn’t require a flight or a long hours drive. It is just a 122 km drive from Kathmandu to the northern side.

The trip to Langtang can be observed via two aspects natural and cultural. Culturally this journey is perfect to explore the Tamang settlements in the Langtang Valley. Diverse ethnic people reside there around including Sherpa, Newars, and Chhetries with their rich and unique culture. Naturally, we can explore the magnificent view of the Langtang National Park, lavish hills, terraced fields, and beautiful gorges. Different species of endangered animals such as the Red Panda, wild deer, Himalayan Thar, and the national bird of our country- Danphe can be explored in this journey. With the inclusion of Kathmandu arrival day and departure day, you can complete the Langtang Valley trek in 9 days.

Nonetheless, Lantang is a less spoiled trekking zone in Nepal. It is not as crowded as Everest and Annapurna. All the treks of this region are located inside the Langtang National Park. Around 25% of this park is covered with forest. So it is the perfect trail for those who are looking for a less-traffic trek.

All in all, I recommend making a journey to Langtang for all once in your life.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of year to trek to Langtang?

Since the Langtang Valley trekking goes from lower tropical land to alpine land, we should choose the best time. In fact, the best time to visit Langtang is the autumn and spring. Both seasons offer moderate temperatures with clear skies and stable weather. However, in the spring seasons, you’ll see the colorful forest (spring is rhododendron blooming time in Nepal). All in all, you’ll have great Langtang mountain views during those two seasons.

What is the estimated duration for completing a trek to Langtang Valley?

Typically, 7 days is enough for Langtang valley trekking from Kathmandu to Kathmandu. But if you want to extend it, you can combine it with another part or side trips. If you wish to do a whole Langtang circuit trek, it takes approximately 18 days. Langtang Circuit trek means Tamang Heritage Trail Trekking and Gosaikunda Pass including Langtang Valley trekking.

How is Langtang Trekking now, after the 2015 earthquake?

At 11.56 am on Saturday, 25 April 2015, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake shook Nepal. It created a huge landslide of rock and ice that slid off the 7,234m Langtang Lirung. The Langtang village was totally destroyed. The village was wiped out, and over approximately 200 people died, including around 40 foreign tourists and other Nepali people. Fortunately, the locals have shifted the accommodation place of Langtang Village. The place where it is now shifted is a safer and flatter landscape. Nowadays, some of them have already made good lodges, and some of them are still making them.

What is the difficulty level of the Langtang Valley trekking?

The Langtang Valley Hike is an easy to moderate difficulty hiking route. The highest accommodation place is 3800m, known as Kyajin Gompa. The hike to Kyanjin Ri is an easy trail, with a mostly flat and uphill ascent. To only reach Kyanjin Gompa, the Langtang Valley Hike is easy. But if you want to climb Kyanjin Ri (4600m) and Tserko Ri (4900m), it will be a moderate difficulty trek. From Kyanjin Ri and Tsrerki, we have astonishing views of the Langtang Ranges.

Can I go to Langtang without any hiking experience?

No. If you can walk 6 to 7 hours a day, you can explore Langtang Valley easily. Needless to say, if you have hiking experience, it will be an advantage for you.

What types of Accommodation can we get on trekking to Langtang Valley?

Before the earthquake of 2015, teahouses in Langtang were very basic. Nowadays, most of the teahouses in the Langtang Valley Route beyond Lama Hotel are newly built and have clean rooms with attached toilets. They are small, family-run guesthouses that offer basic rooms and delicious meals. Teahouses are typically located in villages and settlements along the trail.

Can we get Vegetarian food and Vegan food in Langtang?

Everywhere in Langtang trekking area, you can get both vegetarian/vegan and non-vegetarian food items. The hotels in Langtang have menus, so you can choose what you want to eat. Vegetarian food is easily available at all teahouses in this route.

Can I get Safe Drinking water during the Langtang hike?

Sure, you will get Mineral Water from Syabrubesi to Kyanjin Gompa. This means you will get Safe Drinking Water everywhere on the Langtang trek. Mineral water at the beginning of the trek costs Rs 100, and it costs NRP 250 in high elevations such as Kyanjin Gumpa.

Do I need to have a porter to carry my luggage?

If you go with a porter, you can easily walk and photograph during your journey to Lantang, making your trip more comfortable.

Do I need to go with a sleeping bag for trekking to Langtang?

Even though teahouses provide you with one or two blankets (depending on the season and availability), it can be freezing cold beyond Lama Hotel. It can be difficult to get enough blankets during the trekking season, so I recommend bringing your own sleeping bag to Langtang.

Can you provide information on how to reach and depart from Lantang for trekking?

It is very easy to visit Langtang Valley and return to Kathmandu. If you are in Thamel or any part of Kathmandu, you can either take a local bus to Syabrubesi from New Buspark or hire a private jeep. The first local bus leaves at 6:30am, the second one at 7:30am, and the last one at 10am. However, if you prefer a more comfortable journey to Syabrubesi, you can hire a private jeep. You can return from Syabrubesi to Kathmandu by bus or jeep, just like from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi.

Langtang Hike in February

Rated 5 out of 5

I contacted Jayaram for Langtang Trek, from BASE CAMP HIKE. He helped me to make a private hike to Langtang. I did Langtang Hiking in mid-February and it was unforgettable. The trail was covered by snow from Godatabela and beyond part is very cold. But the scenery was magical. Especially from view, Tserkuri was eye-catching.

Regarding trip management, It was perfectly organized. How everything was so organized, in detail. I didn’t have to worry about anything.

Navaraj was my guide and he was professional and friendly. It was amazing to learn from his experience(not only about the mountains but also about Nepali culture).

I would definitely recommend trekking with Base Camp Hike and Nabaraj. I will come to Everest Base Camp Trekking soon and go with them.

Memorable 7 days Langtang Valley trip

Rated 5 out of 5

In September 2019, we went Hiking to Langtang with Base Camp Hike. It was memorable hiking. Because we got everything so perfectly.

We contacted this agency because we had an excellent experience of their services from previous treks(Poon Hill Trek). The trip was perfectly organized and we enjoyed every minute of it. We were lucky with good weather. On this trek, the guide was Som Shrestha and Porter was Saroj. Guide Som is excellent, knowledgeable, friendly, and has a good sense of humor. I suggest to all to book any trekking in Nepal with Base Camp Hike.
