Compared to the EVEREST BASE CAMP TREK, Gokyo Lakes is less crowded. For Trekkers who wish to see fewer trekkers on Everest Trekking, Gokyo is the best.

Trekking through the scenic villages on Everest, you can enjoy the interesting culture and traditions of Everest. Walking through the lowlands to high alpine lands, lush jungles, and snow-covered landscapes makes a worthwhile journey. During the trial, you’ll also get the opportunity to see diverse plants and wildlife species at Sagarmatha National Park.

Trekking to Gokyo is the best option for those who don’t want to EBC trek but want to see the stunning views of Everest as well as the magical 5 Gokyo Lake. This trail is less traffic than the EB. Moreover, this trail offers one of the best viewpoints of Nepal, Gokyo RI. Located at the same altitude as Everest Base Camp, this view station offers spectacular views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and many more peaks.

Day 01

Enjoy breathtaking views of the Himalayas on a flight to Lukla. KTM to Lukla is one of the most adventurous flights rated by highly authoritative websites and travel magazines as well. The KTM to Lukla flight takes approx 35 minutes. Attempt to get your seat on the left side of the plane while confirming your ticket at TIA airport.

Upon landing in Lukla, we’ll move towards Phakding. Phakding is located at an altitude of 2,652 meters.
We’ll trek downhill for approximately four hours by following the very beautiful Dudh Koshi River to get to Phakding. Stay overnight at Guesthouse in Phakding.

Day 02

Phakding to Namche Bazar

On this day, We’ll stroll the trek mostly uphill to Namche Bazaar by crossing the several teahouses on the way. We will also cross several suspension bridges with stunning views of the Himalayas. As you reach the Namche Bazaar, you can interact with the Sherpa People and get involved with their unique culture and traditions. Stay overnight at Namche Bazaar.

On this day, you’ll hike through the wonderful trails up to Namche Bazar. The Namche is the most popular village in the Everest region(Khumbu). Compared to 1 Lukla to Phakding, Phakding to Namche Bazaar is difficult. The reason is on the way, there are many ascents.

During the hike, you’ll cross small villages such as Monjo and Jhorsale. You’ll also use the Hilary suspension bridge on this day. After the tough ascent before Namche, you will reach Namche Bazaar. Stay overnight at a teahouse in Namche town.

Acclimatization Day in Namche Bazaar – Hike to Everest View Hotel

On 3rd day in Gokyo, we’ll acclimatize at Namche. For that, we’ll hike to nearby places which are higher than Namche Bazaar. Our guide leads you to different places from Namche. For example Everest View Hotel Hike, Khumjung and Khunde hike, and Thame Hike. The Everest View Hotel is the highest-placed hotel. You can take breakfast together with amazing mountain views. Day 04

Trek to Dole

Trekking to Machhermo

5th day, the trekking from Dole to Machhermo is much more comfortable and it’s also a short hike. On this day, you’ll see stunning views of Mt. Day 5th night, we will stay overnight at a teahouse in Machhermo.

Trekking to Gokyo

Today is the most exciting day of this Gokyo trek. We’ll start to hike in the early morning passing the streams then climb steeply up 2 hrs to summit Gokyo Ri( Gokyo Peak).

During climbing up to the Peak, the trail provides eye-catching views of the Himalayas as well as the largest Nagzumba glacier.

From Gokyo Ri, we can see a wonderful sunrise view over the tallest peak such as Mt. Everest, Cho Oyu, Makalu, Lhotse, and numerous other peaks. FAQs

How to Get there and away?

Getting there is the same as trekking to Everest Base Camp. Because the first part of the trek follows the same as EBC(up to Namche). So to get to the starting point of this trail, the most common way is to fly to Lukla(a small Himalayas airport). It lasts 30 to 35 minutes from Kathmandu-Lukla but offers an amazing experience. However, since it is a mountain airport, based weather frequently closes the airport. We strongly recommended travellers to prepare for delays(extra 1-2 days) if KTM – Lukla and Lukla – KTM.

When is the best time to visit? (Best Season)

Spring and Autumn
As with most treks in Nepal, the best time to explore Gokyo are September – November(Autumn) and March-May(Spring).

Should I have hiking experience to go trekking Gokyo Ri?

Since Trekking to Gokyo is high-altitude Himalayas trekking, your body should decently fit. 5 to 6 hours each day are required to walk. So you should do some cardio exercise some months before the trek.

Is drinking water available on the trek?

Sure, you’ll get safe drinking water during the trek by paying 2 to 3 dollars(depending on altitudes). However, if you bring a water bottle and water purification tablet, you’ll save money as well as nature too. Because you’ll get free water at the hotel so that you can fill your bottle. Beyond that, you can make drinkable water by putting it in a tablet.

What is the standard of accommodation on the trek?

Likewise, on the EBC trek, accommodations on Gokyo Trek are tea houses. In these teahouses, you’ll get a shared room, basic amenities, Internet/WIFI, and food. The beds in the teahouse are usually comfortable and clean.

Is there any possibility of Acute Mountain Sickness?

Gokyo Ri Trek starts from 2800m and goes up to 5357m. It shows it is high-altitude trekking. And AMS is generally shown above the elevation of 3200m. So to be safe from AMS, you should drink plenty of water, and soup, and keep your body warm.

Do I need travel insurance for the Trek?

It’s required. As it is high-altitude trekking, nobody knows what will happen to you during the trek. So to be safe from uncertain things, travel insurance is required to have. You should have travel insurance that covers Helicopter evacuation, medical expenses, accidents, and natural disasters.

We did trekking to Gokyo Lake with Guide Kamal from Company Base Camp Hike. It was a wonderful trip where we saw amazing lakes with crystal-clear water. We climbed Gokyo Ri early in the morning and enjoyed with sunrise and views of Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, and other snow-capped mountains.
