Because trekking in Nepal involves long hours walk with steep ascend and descent. Taking proper training is vital especially if you’re entry-level trekkers.  However you may not need to do formal training if you have good physical fitness level and cardio vascular abilities.

Nepal is a dream destination for trekkers around the world because trekking in Nepal offers diversified landscapes, rich culture, and eye-catching mountain views of giant peaks, over 7000 meters. For beginners trekkers, however, trekking in Nepal is not just about stepping onto a scenic trail; it requires proper preparation to ensure safety, enjoyment, and success. Here’s a complete guide on how to train for your first trek in Nepal.

1. Build Your Cardiovascular Fitness

The main important tips for building your cardiovascular fitness for trekking. Because most of the treks in Nepal involve long days of walking on varying terrain, often at high altitudes.  In the thin air of the Himalayas, your heart and lungs work differently. Thus, you need to build your aerobic base so that your body becomes efficient at using oxygen. Try to aim for 30 to 40 minutes of cardio with 3 to 4 times a week. Here is the list of activities that you can do to build your cardiovascular fitness.

  • Start with brisk walks: Begin with 30 to 45 minutes, 3 to 4 times a week.
  • Jogging
  • Cycling, running, or swimming to improve lung capacity

Tip for those who live in a city: If you live in a flat city, find a stair climber or a treadmill with a steep incline. Walking on an incline is the closest simulation to the “Nepali Flat”. Nepali Flat is a local joke that means “a little bit up and a little bit down”.

2. Strengthen Your Muscles

Trekking involves climbing, descending, and carrying a backpack. Strong muscles reduce the risk of injury. Exercises like squats, lunges, step-ups, and leg presses are essential for building these muscle groups. Planks, Russian twists, and leg raises are excellent core-strengthening exercises.

  • Focus on your legs: Squats, lunges, and step-ups are excellent for building leg strength.
  • Strengthen your core: Planks and abdominal exercises will improve balance on uneven terrain.
  • Upper body conditioning: Push-ups and light weight training will help with carrying your pack.

3. Train with a Backpack

Carrying a backpack throughout the trek can feel heavy if you are unprepared. If you’re planning to go on a guided trek, you may get a trekking package that includes a porter who will help you carry your luggage for the trek. Even if the trek includes a porter, you may need to carry your daypack, which consists of your wallet, camera, documents,  and other most important things.

  • Start light: Begin by carrying 3 to 5 kg and gradually increase the weight.
  • Practice on uphill and downhill routes to mimic real trek conditions.

4. Acclimatise to Altitude Gradually

While we cannot fully prepare for high altitude at home, we can condition your body to handle physical stress. To acclimatize to altitude gradually, we can do activities as follows:

  • Hike on hilly terrain if possible.
  • Do multi-day hikes to get used to consecutive hiking days.
  • Learn about altitude sickness and the importance of slow ascent during your trek in Nepal.

5. Flexibility and Recovery

Stretching before and after training sessions prevents injuries and improves endurance.

  • Include yoga or mobility exercises in your training plan.
  • Ensure you get proper rest and recovery days.

6. Mental Preparation

Besides physical exercise and preparation, mental preparation is also required. Trekking in Nepal requires patience and determination. Long days, unpredictable weather, and basic accommodation are part of the adventure. Trekking in the Himalayas can present numerous challenges, including unpredictable weather conditions and the effects of high altitude. Building mental resilience is essential to overcome these obstacles.  Understand that trekking in the Himalayas can be physically demanding and may require you to go beyond your comfort zone. Welcome discomfort as a stepping stone to achievement and immerse yourself in the present moment. In short

  • Set realistic expectations and stay positive.
  • Train in varied conditions to build resilience.

7. Other essential tips for the training

  • Wear comfortable hiking boots and break them in before your trip.
  • Learn to pace yourself rather than rushing.
  • Stay hydrated and well-nourished throughout your trek.
