Syabrubesi to Sherpagaun

While most trekkers follow the traditional trail to Lama Hotel,we have alternative route to skip this place for the first night of the Langtang Trek. Thesedays, trekkers are choosing the Sherpagaun route, making first night at Sherpagaun for their Langtang Valley Trek. If you prefer wide open Himalayan vistas, sun-drenched trails, and rooms with attached bathrooms, this is the route for you.

Why the Sherpagaun Route is Superior to the Lama Hotel Section

Lama Hotel is located in a river canyon where the sun sets early. Since most trekking agencies and solo trekkers follow the traditional path and use the same camp when returning from Kyanjin Gompa, Lama Hotel can become very busy, and teahouses and rooms are limited. Consequently, finding a room can be a challenge. By choosing Sherpagaun (2,563m), you will enjoy the following advantages:

Breathtaking Landscapes:

Unlike the enclosed forest of the lower traditional trail, the Sherpagaun route offers beautiful views of the valley, local farmlands, and the surrounding peaks.

The Sunny Side:

Sherpagaun sits on a high balcony, receiving much more sunlight than Lama Hotel. It is a significantly warmer place to stay.

Better Accommodation:

Sherpagaun is known for its cozy teahouses and the availability of attached bathrooms. It is a perfect place to avoid the crowded Lama Hotel section. Along with attached bathrooms, in Sherpagaun, you can enjoy hot showers, Wi-Fi, and quality food.

The “Loop” Experience:

By ascending via Sherpagaun and descending back to Syabrubesi via the river trail, you ensure that your return journey from Rimche remains a new experience rather than walking the exact same path twice.

The Trail: What to Expect

The trek from Syabrubesi to Sherpagaun is a steady climb. You will leave the main river trail and ascend through terraced fields and ancient Tamang settlements. Once you reach Khanjim, you will be rewarded with great views of the Himalayas.

Generally, it takes 5 to 6 hours to reach Sherpagaun from Syabrubesi on foot. This section features more uphill terrain than the river route, but the views make the effort feel easier. After about 3 to 4 hours of trekking, you will reach Khanjim village, a perfect place to rest and enjoy a local meal with a view. If you wish to skip the initial ascent or if you want to finish the Langtang Valley Trek in 5 days with short itinerary, you can also drive from Syabrubesi to Khanjim for approximately USD 30.
