Kyanjin Ri and Tserko Ri are the 2 major viewpoints for the Langtang Valley Trek. Depending on your interest, fitness, and itinerary, today is the day we choose our hiking objective: Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri. Compared to the trek from Thangsyap to Kyanjin Gompa on Day 3, today will be significantly tougher as we ascend to high-altitude viewpoints.
After exploring Kyanjin Gompa, you are faced with the most exciting decision of the Langtang trek: Which viewpoint should you climb? Both Kyanjin Ri and Tserko Ri offer the best views of the Langtang ranges, but they provide very different experiences.
The Kyanjin Ri Hike is less time-consuming and easier in terms of difficulty than Tserko Ri Hike. It is the most popular choice for trekkers in the Langtang region. The hike is divided into a “Lower” viewpoint (4,300 meter) and an “Upper” viewpoint (4,773 meter). Depending on your energy levels, we can return from the lower point or continue to the true summit.
Kyanjin Ri is ideal for beginners, sunrise lovers, and those wanting a half-day adventure, especially for the Langtang Short Trek. The trail begins with a steep, zigzagging ascent right behind the village. It typically takes around 3 hours to reach the summit from Kyanjin Gompa and about 2 hours to return.
In terms of views, you’ll get a “front-row seat” to the Langtang Lirung glacier. From here, you can often hear the ice cracking and witness safe avalanches tumbling down the 7,000m peaks across the valley.
Located at 4,985 meter above sea level, Tserko Ri (also spelled Tsergo Ri) is a different beast entirely. It is a full-day hike with a challenging ascent and is the highest point most trekkers will reach during the Langtang trek.
This hike is best suited for fit trekkers, photographers, and those determined to break the 5,000-meter mark. It is a demanding 7 to 8-hour round trip, depending on your pace. The trail is rocky, steep, and physically taxing due to the thin air.
The reward at the summit is a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the entire Langtang Himalayan range. On clear days, you can see deep into Tibet and even spot Shishapangma (8,027m), the only 8,000m peak visible on this trek.
| Feature | Kyanjin Ri | Tserko Ri |
|---|---|---|

| Duration | 4 to 5 hours | 7 to 8 hours |

| Main View | Close-up glacier and peaks | 360° Himalayan panorama |
If your itinerary allows for 2-night stay in Kyanjin Gompa and the weather is clear, we highly recommend Tserko Ri. However, if you are on a tighter schedule and need to return to Ghoda Tabela or Thangsyap the same afternoon, Kyanjin Ri is the better choice.
Tserko Ri is best reserved for experienced trekkers ready for a strenuous walk. Many of our guests at Base Camp Hike choose to climb Kyanjin Ri for a spectacular sunrise. For those attempting Tserko Ri, we recommend a 5:00 AM start to ensure you reach the summit before the afternoon clouds roll in. Both Kyanjin Ri and Tserko Ri offers great views.
